Final Expense Insurance

Final expense insurance is a smaller permanent life policy intended to help cover funeral, burial, and other end-of-life costs so loved ones are not left to pay them. Coverage amounts are modest and qualification is often simplified.

Who it may suit

  • Seniors planning ahead for final costs
  • Anyone who wants to ease the burden on family
  • People who prefer simplified qualification

How it generally works

You choose a coverage amount sized to expected final costs — often in the thousands to low tens of thousands.

Premiums are generally level and coverage is permanent as long as premiums are paid. The benefit is paid to your named beneficiary, who may use it for any purpose.

Some policies use a few health questions (simplified issue); others are guaranteed issue and may include a graded death benefit or waiting period.

Potential advantages

  • Simplified qualification on many policies
  • Level premiums and permanent coverage
  • Benefit paid to your beneficiary, not a funeral home

Important limitations

  • Lower coverage amounts than other policies
  • Guaranteed-issue plans may include a waiting period
  • Cost per dollar of coverage can be higher

How much final expense coverage do people choose?

Many people size coverage to expected funeral, burial or cremation, and small final costs. Our final-expense planner can help you estimate a realistic amount.

Is there a waiting period?

Simplified-issue policies often pay the full benefit right away, while guaranteed-issue policies may include a graded benefit or waiting period. We will explain which applies to a given policy.

Can I be turned down?

Guaranteed-issue policies generally accept applicants within an eligible age range. Simplified-issue policies ask a few questions but rarely require an exam.
