Frequently asked questions
Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most. Still unsure? Ask us directly.
How much life insurance might I need?
It depends on what you want to protect — income, a mortgage, education, or final expenses — minus savings and any coverage you already have. Our needs calculator gives a general estimate to discuss with an advisor.
What is the difference between term and whole life?
Term covers you for a set number of years and is generally more affordable. Whole life is permanent and can build cash value. The right fit depends on how long you need coverage and your goals.
Do all policies require a medical exam?
No. Some policies use accelerated or simplified underwriting with no exam, though health questions and third-party data may still apply. 'No exam' does not always mean 'no underwriting.'
Can I get coverage with a health condition?
Often, yes. Many conditions are still insurable, sometimes at adjusted rates, and guaranteed-issue options may be available. The right carrier depends on your situation.
What affects the cost of life insurance?
Generally your age, health, tobacco use, the coverage amount and length, and any riders. An advisor can help you compare available options.
How are beneficiaries paid?
If you pass away while the policy is in force, the insurer generally pays the death benefit to your named beneficiaries. It helps to keep primary and contingent beneficiaries current.
Does working with an independent agent cost extra?
No. Independent agents are generally compensated by the insurance carriers, so guidance is provided at no separate cost to you.
Which areas does Big Sioux Life serve?
We serve all of South Dakota, with an office in Sioux Falls.
Is a life insurance payout taxable?
Life insurance death benefits are often not subject to federal income tax, but situations vary and other circumstances can apply. This is not tax advice — please consult a tax professional.
